Most local businesses do not lose to a national brand. They lose to the shop two towns over that claimed their Google Business Profile, asked for reviews, and put a real city + service on the homepage. You do not need a 40-page blog to get calls. You need the basics done completely.
1. Own the Google Business Profile
This is still the fastest local ranking lever. Claim the listing, pick the one primary category that matches how people search (plumber, not “home services”), and add every real service you sell. Hours, phone, and address must match the website and citations. Upload recent photos of the shop, team, and finished work — Google treats fresh photos as a trust signal.
Post once a week: an offer, a job photo, or a short how-to. It takes five minutes and keeps the profile from looking abandoned.
2. Make the website agree with the listing
Your homepage title and first paragraph should name the city (or service area) and the main service. A footer NAP — name, address, phone or email — should match the profile character for character. If you hide the phone on purpose, keep the email and city consistent everywhere.
Create one location or service-area page that is actually useful: neighborhoods you cover, typical jobs, and a form. Thin “serving 40 cities” pages with the same paragraph copied 40 times do more harm than good.
3. Reviews you can defend
Ask after a good job, not in a blast to everyone. Link people to the Google review form. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, in a calm sentence. You do not need 500 five-star ratings. You need a steady trickle and a profile that looks alive.
4. On-page that Google can parse
One H1. Clear H2s for services. A contact form above the fold on mobile. Schema for LocalBusiness if you have a real address. Fast load — if the page takes four seconds on a phone, the ranking you just won still bounces.
5. What to skip (for now)
Do not buy 50 directory links from a “citation blast.” Do not publish daily AI posts that say nothing. Do not chase a national keyword you cannot win. Finish the checklist, then add content that answers the questions people ask before they hire you.
